Just in from the Garden

I planted the Benary’s zinnias just moments ago. My lettuces have been filling the salad bowl for a week now, the Brussels Sprouts (a family favorite) are looking strong as are the peppers, eggplants, kale, chard and strawberries.

Screen Shot 2013-05-17 at 3.15.31 PMI also planted ‘All Star’ strawberries which are touted as large, sweet, extra juicy berries that bears fruit in late spring and early summer. It is a Junebearer which means that all the fruits are ready to harvest around the same time, making it a good choice if you want to freeze some for winter. All Star is resistant to verticillium wilt, red stele, and somewhat resistant to leaf scorch and powdery mildew.

When I buy plants – flowers and vegetables – I try to purchase only those with resistance to some of the most common diseases. It doesn’t mean that they can’t get powdery mildew (for example) but it does mean they have some resistance to this disease when compared to the same vegetable that doesn’t have resistance. Think of it as giving you – the gardener – a bit of the upper hand … like having a plant with a stronger immune system.

If you want to grow these DeGroot carries them and will send a free catalog. DeGroot http://www.degroot-inc.com The photo above is from their website.

What are you growing?

Tomorrow I will be at the Moreau Community Garden off Jan Street. If you are interested in gardening, plots are available. And both Toadflax and Mead’s nurseries have provided incentives for the gardeners. So if you have signed up, come get your coupons.

Hopefully I will see you there. Natalie
